Social Media Makes Celebrities Vulnerable

Exactly one year ago today, Kim Kardashian was robbed in Paris, and yes, we are still talking about it.

One of the reasons that Kim Kardashian is always on everyone's radar, is because she puts herself on everyone's radar! She constantly updates all of her fans and followers about her life throughout all of her social media channels, like most celebrities do. Last year, on this same day she was robbed of $10 million worth of jewelry in her hotel room (or apartment?) in Paris, and it truly was a traumatic experience for her. While there's a lot to blame for this, her social media usage is probably the number one reason.

She was so open about her locations and her expensive things on social media, that it was easy to track her. It was almost not a surprise when the headlines announced that she was robbed of all of her expensive jewelry last October. But this robbery brings up a good question about social media and safety for celebrities and even normal people using the outlets to share parts of their lives.

Since the robbery, Kim has monitored and changed her social media usage a lot, and while she's doing a better job at protecting herself, this level of moderation kind of takes away the appeal. I know Kim Kardashian is famous enough now to stay relevant without posting everything on social media all the time, but I remembered how cool it was to watch her detailed snapchat stories everyday. It was like I was getting to see what a day in the life of Kim Kardashian was like. Obviously safety is the most important thing, Kim definitely shouldn't risk her life to keep her fans updated, but I wonder if there is a better way to monitor her social media. I wonder if the developers of these social media apps can help to make the social web a safer place, not just for celebrities, but for everyone.
